Our Asian Star initiative will celebrate its ten-year anniversary when the ground-breaking event returns to Stamford Bridge this May.
The event, which is designed to give a much-needed boost to Asian participation at all levels of the game, made its Stamford Bridge debut last year and will return to SW6 on Sunday 20 May and this season, for the first time, girls will also be invited to apply and enjoy the day.
The initiative, the first of its kind undertaken by a professional football club, was recognised with the ‘Special Recognition’ Award at the Asian Football Awards in November 2017 and is for players aged 9 to 12 with applications now open.
It is fun, engaging and free, and players who excel on the day will be offered a year-long placement at one of our Foundation Development Centres, while girls who impress will be invited for a trial at our Girls Regional Talent Centre.
Former Chelsea striker and club ambassador Tore Andre Flo, who attended last year’s event at Stamford Bridge, said: ‘It is a fantastic event run by the Chelsea Foundation and most importantly a great opportunity for these young children.
‘There are lots of different nationalities in the Premier League and England in general but not many from the Asian community and we hope events like this will start to change that process.
‘Of course we would love to find a star player but the main thing is the kids have fun and having spent some time with them there is no doubt they are.’
Asian Star was launched in 2009 and has grown in size ever since, attracting almost 400 young players and their parents to Stamford Bridge last year, where they competed in a series of matches and tests to examine speed, skill and ability. The winners in each age group were all invited to join the Chelsea Foundation’s Football Development Centres.
Chelsea will also be inviting managers, coaches and scouts from clubs at all levels of the game to identify talented youngsters and we will work closely with the Football Association and London FA on the day, with workshops and useful information available to parents.
