SJFC U8s were undone by set pieces as they succumbed 7-2 to high-flyers Kings Church Amersham.
In arguably the toughest test so far, SJFC twice threatened a swashbuckling comeback but were undone by some great long-range efforts from the hosts.
A sluggish start didn’t help as a confounded Stanmore outfit found themselves 3-0 down after the first quarter.
But a renewed emphasis on pressing turned the tide, allowing defender Danyaal Panju to pop up in space and slot home his first goal of the season.
3-1 down at half-time, the battle continued after the break with both sides trading blows. Mahdi Hassan Laji chalked up his fifth goal of the season with a sumptuous chip to reduce the deficit to 4-2 going into the fourth quarter.
But Stanmore didn’t quite have enough against an excellent Kings Church side. Two goals from corners came either side of a free kick whipped into the top corner.
Still, the period of play in the second and third quarter showed this team can go toe-to-toe with the best in the league.
