Sunday 9th April saw a tale of two halves unfold where SJFA’s Tier 6 would play against Chorleywood FC U16 at their home ground. We came up against a well-trained and skillful team who had reached the county finals and were top in their division. Some of the opposition were above the age category, whilst some of ours were younger. It was definitely going to be a challenge to compete with a team of this calibre. In the first half we played, wearing our heart on our sleeves. Support from the midfield and some fierce defending restricted the opposition lead to just 3-0 at half-time after a continuous wave of attacks from them. Throughout the game we struggled to enter the opposition’s half, which fundamentally came down to an inability to kick the ball the required distance to reach the half-way line. This is one area that we will need to work on, going into future games. The positive attitude that all the players showed in the first half was exceptional.

Then came the second half. Within the first five minutes we had already conceded three goals. All the fight that we had previously shown in the first half had been lost. There were cries from the sidelines to rise up again and challenge once more but the only response we gave was 9 goals in the back of our net. Sadly, throughout the game we only managed two shots on goal. The final score of 15-0 made it seem as if we were playing a different game, almost entering into the territory of a rugby score. Despite the fact that we collapsed at the end, and our lack of fitness made us suffer for our mistakes, it was still a game to remember and a huge learning experience.

Finally I’d like to thank all of our coaches who facilitated this opportunity for us and continued to support us through the entirety of the game. We look forward to the next game ahead.
