On a cold, wintery, windy, rain, and freezing Saturday morning, SJFC Eagles had their first league match of the season, at their new home ground at Maple Cross. Satnav sent some parents to the wrong location, so some boys came just before kick off.

With a quick warm up, which I suspect didn’t do much to warm the kids given the 0 degrees temperature, the Eagles played the first half down wind.

A cagey start from both teams, but a great ball from the defence through Jaabir to Ali who then released Aadam Merali on the right and he fire it in from the edge of the area to get the eagles 1-0 up.

Hassan V was striker in quarter 1 and batteled well. Hassan Hussein and Amaan (playing at left back) held the line well with some great interceptions which meant Amaar didn’t have much to do.

Eagles went 2-0 towards the end of Q1, and then soon went 3-0 in Q2 (wind still assisting them), through goals from Ali who was enjoying himself in midfield – some long range efforts which he was proud of.  Mikhial came on in the second quarter and slotted into midfield and was a constant force fo the rest of the game making some . Zaki was energetic on the left and made lots of runs through the middle and on the left, but couldn’t get a  shot off.

Bison had a number of good opportunities to break in Q2, and then got a corner which bobbled and bisons swept it in. 3-1 at the end of the first half. Zayn K cam on in the second quarter and played in midfield, before moving to defence and had strong inetrceptions to keep Bison at bay.

Quarter 3 – rain and hail. Oh and wind. And Eagles were playing into the wind.

Zain D was on pitch and was linking up well with Hasan, Zaki and Ali and Aadam and got a goal in Q3 to get to 4-1. Ali then got another to 5-1. In the meantime, the defence of Jaabir, Hassan H and Amaan/Zayn (swapping in Q3 and Q4) kept Bison at bay.

Amaar in goal was having as strong game throughout and made some amazing saves at crucial times to thwart Bison, and his distribution was excellent

Q4 – the kids were all freezing and Bisons put on extra layers to keep warm. Eagles got another 2 in the final quarter to end 7-1. One from Zaki which his dad was very proud of.

Overall, a very satisfying win in testing conditions. Well done to all the boys and thanks to the dads for putting goal nets up etc.
