Stanmore Contingent Win HFC Revival Tournament

Two Stanmore over 34s teams participated in a 7 a-side tournament organised by Hyderi Football Club. In total 6 teams in the over 34s category participated in the tournament which was held in South Croydon, including teams from the Hyderi and Leicester Jamaats.

The Stanmore teams (A & B) were captained by Hussein Pirbhai/Mo Valji and Mohammed Valjy respectively. All six teams played each other with the top two teams going straight into the semi-finals and the remaining four teams playing off to reach the semi-finals. All the games were tight with Stanmore A & B reaching the play offs.

Stanmore A and Stanmore B comfortably won their play offs against George’s Best and Dewji’s Chaiwalla’s respectively. In the semi-final, Stanmore A played a tough match against Husseini All Stars (Leicester). Remaining scoreless, the game went to penalties with Mo Valji making a couple of great saves to get Stanmore A to the final. The penalty shootout can be seen here.

Stanmore B also had a tense semi-final encounter with Haji Heroes, but in the final minute, an Afzal Merali effort from his own half beat the opposition goalkeeper to make it an all Stanmore final.

The final, as expected, was close and competitive. Both teams playing attacking football. The first goal, coming from Stanmore B was sheer sublime. With Stanmore A on the attack, a quick interception meant Stanmore B went from defensive to attack. In three touches from their own half, Stanmore B took the lead with a great finish from Asgherali Gulamhussien. Stanmore B finished the game off with late second goal. Stanmore A 0 – Stanmore B 2.

The tournament was a huge success for Stanmore. A big thank you to Hyderi Football Club for organising a great tournament and the fantastic BBQ which was well received by all participants.
